School Board Trustees play an important role in shaping the future of education. They provide decision-making oversight and governance to our school division, which helps guide the educational experience of our students. On Monday, October 20, 2025, there will be an election in Alberta to choose who will help guide Prairie Land School Division for the next four years.

If you want to be a candidate in the upcoming election, find the pertinent information you need to know and forms you must complete below.
Important Dates
- January 1st: nomination period opens
- September 22nd: nomination period closes
- nomination forms must be accepted by the Returning Officer (Mark Nikota) by 12:00pm on September 22nd
- September 23rd: candidates may withdraw their nomination
- October 20th: election day
- October 22nd: deadline to request a recount
In order to be a candidate in the upcoming election, you must fill out and return the following four forms to the returning officer
- Form 4 (Nomination Paper and Candidate’s Acceptance) The 5 electors that sign your form must be eligible to vote and be a resident of the ward in which you are running
- Form 5: Candidate Information
- Form 26: Campaign Disclosure Statement and Financial Statement
- Form 29: Notice of Intent
Eligibility Rules
To be eligible to run in the upcoming election, you must meet certain criteria as outlined in both the Education Act (section 74) and the Local Authorities Election Act (sections 21 to 24). Basic details can be found on page 7 of the ASBA Guide for School Board Trustees and page 17 of the Government of Alberta’s guide on School Board elections. Full details and information can be found by reading the appropriate sections of the Education Act and Local Authorities Election Act.
Campaign Finance, Contributions & Disclosure
There are several rules in regards to accepting donations and financing your campaign. Candidates can find information in the Government’s Guide to School Board elections (starting on page 40) or can read Part 5.1 of the Local Authorities Election Act. The rules include Campaign Disclosure whereby all candidates must file a disclosure statement with the Returning Officer. Disclosure requirements are outlined starting on page 42 of the Guide or in the Act.
To obtain a copy of the candidate package or to find out more information about the election process, please contact Mark Nikota, Returning Officer. Nomination forms must be filed with the Returning Officer by 12:00pm on Monday, September 22nd.
