PUF – Earlier Supports in Prairie Land Schools

PUF – Earlier Supports in Prairie Land Schools

Program Unit Funding, commonly called PUF, is a grant that Alberta Education provides to school divisions to provide high-quality, language-rich learning environments to 3- and 4-year-old children with severe disabilities who require extra support before they enrol in Kindergarten.

Each Prairie Land school offers the PUF program to children and families who require it. Typically, the child joins the school’s Kindergarten class, and the teacher works with the PUF Coordinator to plan activities that will support the child’s specific needs. Educational Assistants support small groups of children in these classes.

Each child enrolled in PUF receives instruction that is tailored to their specific learning needs. They also have access to existing supports in Prairie Land schools, such as speech therapy, occupational therapist referrals, mental health supports, and intensive literacy through play programs.

To be eligible, children must enter ECS at minimum age of 2 years 8 months and less than 4 years, 8 months, as of August 31 of the respective school year. Children are eligible for two years of PUF programming. They must have been assessed and diagnosed with a severe disability or severe language delay. The assessment must come from a qualified professional, like a Pediatrician, Registered Speech Language Pathologist, or a Registered Psychologist.

If you have questions about the PUF Program or believe your child might be eligible for programming, please contact Ellen Vanderkolk to discuss options.  ellen.vanderkolk@plrd.ab.ca 403-854-4481, ext. 0504
